Shakespeare By The Sea (SBTS, est. 1994) is Atlantic Canada’s longest running professional outdoor summer theatre festival, performing classic works and original musicals with a mission to provide access to live theatre to as many people as possible. Each summer, the company employs around 25 artists and crew, performing for nearly 10,000 people in Halifax’s Point Pleasant Park. Since 2019 the company has operated “The Studio At Shakespeare By The Sea”, a year-round educational outreach and training initiative which aims to introduce young people to the wonder of Shakespeare’s words and the magic of live theatre.
The company also operates The Park Place Theatre, an indoor 90-seat black box venue located on the edge of Point Pleasant Park. The Park Place Theatre serves as office and workshop space for the organization, as well as the home for The Studio at SBTS, and as a rental rehearsal/performance venue for artists, theatre companies, filmmakers, musicians, and other community members.
